Empire Of Sin Gets A New Expansion And Major Update (2024)

Never stop fighting 'til the fight is done

Empire of Sin had a lot of attention when it launched last year, with major publisher Paradox and developer Romero Games giving cause for optimism. The 1920s gangster-era tactics game disappointed in various respects, unfortunately, with our tagline of 'Eliot Mess' giving you a good idea of what we thought of the Switch version in our review.

There have been updates and fixes since, of course, but evidently it's an ongoing project to find the right balance for the game's various systems. This week it's had a major patch with numerous fixes and some additions - called the 'Free Precinct Update' - along with its first major paid expansion, 'Make It Count'. The expansion adds new characters and units, along with 20 new missions; it can be bought on its own or as part of the Expansion Pass.

As you can see in the official patch notes there are a lot of fixes and tweaks thrown in. If you do want to give Empire of Sin a shot now that it's had nearly a year on the market its multiple editions (base and with DLC bundled) are all currently 50% off on the European eShop, though unfortunately that discount doesn't seem to be available (at the time of writing) in North America. Or if you did pick this up at launch, it seems now is as good a time as any for a revisit.

Hopefully the various fixes have brought this game closer to its potential; if you have Empire of Sin on Switch and try it with the update do let us know how it's faring in the comments.

@xDeckardx Are you on Switch, and is it in good condition now in terms of bugs etc? I really want to play it / like it, but am interested to know how it's shaping up nowadays.

@ThomasBW84 Oh it's certainly still not 100% perfect, but if you can find yourself a cheap copy of it on sale I'd say grab it! The bugs I've experienced haven't been game breaking or anything. Think of it as like a Bethesda game; save often! It certainly helps

About the only real bugs and glitches I've noticed are cosmetic. Like characters stuck in a standing pose while moving. Overall it's not an amazingly polished game, but a fun game nonetheless

@xDeckardx thanks for the notes on this. I know it’s a tall ask, but would love NL to make a revised review post all the patches. This was the game I was most excited for in 2021, but then they completely messed up the launch big time.

@aSmilingMan Oh no troubles my friend!
Yeah I wish more review sites would go back and re-review patched up games! The folks at "Switchup" on Youtube usually do a "All Patched Up" video every once and awhile where they go back to look at how patches improve any issues and bugs. Check out the channel if you seem interested! They are my go to for most of my reviews

A lot of the folks I know went into Empire with the expectation that it was a AAA XCom-esque clone, but that was an unfair expectation put onto the game. It's certainly not 100% flawless, but if you are willing to accept a few flaws you'll find plenty of gems within this game.

any reason I can't find the dlc on the uk store yet ? while is already available on pc and other console since launch? are we again the last wheel of the truck ? I want to buy the base game because of the 50% discount but now I am delaying it until I am sure we have both patch and dlc on the store

@xDeckardx Looks like something went wrong with the last update. The game has very low resolution in handheld mode with no AA and poor quality textures.
