Step 1: Read thoroughly through the vacancy.

An effective vacancy has the following elements: job description, qualities they are looking for in the person, availability and what is being asked of you. If you like the job description you should make sure you check the boxes if you fit in the profile the company makes. If the vacancy states they are looking for a part-time employee in the weekend and you are only available during the week, you might conclude you are not the right fit for the job. If you are not 100% sure if you fit the vacancy, apply for the job but add this as a comment, sometimes there is still a possibility to make an exception.

Step 3: Prepare for your interview and first day.

If you want to gain an advantage over the other applicants you should prepare well for your interview, if you can show you did some research (it can be as easy as scanning the website for 5 minutes) the person hiring you can see you are genuinely interested. This might be one of the simplest but most effective ways to gain an advantage on your application process in getting your perfect student job. Also make sure to be proactive on your first day, if there are multiple people applying for the job, they will most likely choose the person showing the most interest. Check the video for some good tips on acing your job interview, you might think it is not important for a student job but use this interview to practice for a more serious job in the future.
