'Near miss' of airliners over Lake Michigan MILWAUKEE (AP) A Northwest Airlines jet departing for Washington, D.C., and a Trans World Airlines jet approaching Chicago on a flight from London were involved near miss over Lake Michigan March 4, officials said Wednesday. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Neal Callahan said FAA regulations that there be a minimum separation of 1,000 feet at.

altitudes of less than 18,000 feet. But the airliners were about 900 feet apart about 30 miles east of Milwaukee at the time a "conflict alert" alarm sounded at the Chicago Air route Traffic Control Center at Aurora, Callahan said. He said an air traffic controller mistakenly directed that the TWA jet' turn right when he meant to say left. Callahan said the controller was immediately suspended and was later recertified and returned to He described the controller as a veteran with a good record who "was involved in very personal tragedy in his family just before the Callahan said problems related to the strike by members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization played no part in the incident. "It was just an error in judgment.

The man's a human being," he said. He said Northwest Flight 378, a Boeing 727, had been cleared to climb to 23,000 feet after leaving Milwaukee's Mitchell Field and TWA flight 771 from London, a Boeing 747, was approaching Chicago's O'Hare airport and was cleared to descend to 17,000 feet. The TWA jet was ordered to turn from its southwesterly direction to a southerly direction, and the pilot questioned the direction, Callahan said. The controller then repeated the order. The Northwest jet was at an altitude of 16,200 feet when the pilot spotted the TWA jet above and in front of him and leveled off.

The TWA jet also leveled off, at 17,100 feet, he said.
